“How can I prevent this problem from happening again?”
This is the most common question that we get from our customers.
Antivirus Software
If the problem has been caused by a virus, trojan, or worm infection, we recommend the use of antivirus software. Just having an antivirus program installed is not enough, however. You also need to keep your antivirus software up to date. Too frequently we arrive at a customer’s home to find that their computer has been infected by a virus because they have not kept their antivirus definitions up-to-date; either by clicking off the reminders given by the software, or by letting their computer antivirus subscription expire. Antivirus programs can only be effective if the virus definitions are updated to the latest threats.
Windows Updates
If the problem has occurred because of a Windows Operating System security flaw, we stress the importance of performing Windows Update on a regular bases. Windows XP has an Automatic Updates feature that you can use to automatically download current and future Windows security updates when your computer is on and connected to the Internet.
Internet Firewall
A firewall works by examining information coming from and going to the Internet. It identifies and ignores information that comes from a dangerous location or seems suspicious. If you set up your firewall properly, hackers searching for vulnerable computers can't detect your computer.
